Time changes most things, in fact, these days it seems like trends change on a daily basis. The painting and decorating industry is no exception.

Over the past 100 years in particular the materials, tools and methods decorators use, and the styles they create have evolved dramatically. We take a closer look at how decorating has changed over the decades…

Mass produced materials changed everything

Paint and wallpaper remain the main materials used by those looking to refresh the look and feel of their homes and business properties. Throughout history, wallpaper in particular has sported some rather luxurious designs. During the last century, it’s not just the appearance of wallpaper that has changed but its texture.

The introduction of mass production and technology during the 19th century made wallpaper more widely accessible to everyone, not just the select few that could afford bespoke designs. Wallpapering was particularly popular during the 1970s and 1980s, but it’s more recently that different materials have come into people’s homes. You can now enjoy vinyl, fabric and good old fashioned paper-based wallpaper.

Experimentation took hold during WWII

The paint used by decorators has also undergone quite the transformation during the last 100 years, even though it’s a material that has been used as far back as 38,000 BC. It was during the Second World War that the paint we use today changed the most.

Due to a shortage of linseed oil, manufacturers began to experiment with alcohols and acids to develop artificial resins. These produced paint that was more affordable and durable.

Home décor trends are continuously changing

Home décor has changed drastically during the past century, with every decade presenting a bevy of new signature trends for people to get their teeth into.

Whilst the 20s was all about the glamour with fancy Art Deco accessories, bold colours and statement motifs, the 30s embraced practicality and simplicity. The 1960s saw more worldly themes coming into UK homes, with modern Danish furniture and spiritual touches from across the globe all the rage.

Geometric prints and textiles returned during the 70s, whilst the 80s saw overdressing and wallpaper the focuses in both modern and traditional settings.
