In the world of painting and decorating, there are countless products and materials to choose from, a fact that makes selecting the perfect paint type pretty difficult. Alongside the matt, silk and tough emulsion that’s used to adorn the walls and ceilings of our homes, gloss paint is the go-to product for woodwork, including skirting boards, architraves, book shelves, fire surrounds and stairwells.

As with emulsion, there are several types of gloss paint available. Quick dry, water-based gloss is fast becoming the product of choice for home improvers decorating rooms of all sizes and styles. In this blog post, we explore how it works, how it compares to traditional solvent-based gloss, and why - for the sake of the environment - it should be water-based all the way!

What is water-based gloss paint?

As the name suggests, water-based gloss is exactly that. Whilst water-based gloss has been formulated to embody many of the characteristics of traditional gloss paint – such as its self levelling nature, short open times and sheen – it contains zero solvents.

How else does water-based gloss differ?

Thanks to its formula, the brushes and rollers used to apply this particular gloss type can be rinsed easily with water. That’s right, there’s no need to soak tools in strong smelling, corrosive white spirit.

When compared with traditional solvent-based gloss, water-based gloss doesn’t yellow with time. As you’ll discover, water-based gloss has much bigger benefits for the planet.

Is water-based gloss good for the environment?

Water-based gloss is the ultimate environmentally friendly solution when compared with solvent-based paint.

Whilst not completely outlawed, the shift in environmental legislation means many solvent-based paints are being replaced with eco-conscious, water-based alternatives. Solvent-based paints contain Volatile Organic Compounds (or VOCs) which are toxic to the environment. Due to their strong odours and skin irritating ingredients, solvent paints can affect human health too.

Solvent paints containing VOCs cannot be disposed of easily. They have to be stored, classified and transported in accordance with the latest hazardous waste regulations from the Environment Agency.

How can I get the perfect finish with water-based gloss?

Choosing a good quality water-based gloss is a great place to begin. A quick drying solution is a convenient and practical choice when decorating a modern family home. Hiring a professional to complete your gloss paint job is another must for achieving the perfect finish.
